Teaching Ideas: Using Venn Diagrams in Math
Something new I've recently added to my math curriculum is the use of Venn Diagrams to review multiple math concepts at the same time. This is really a very interesting activity to observe and assess number sense with your students.
Here's the procedure:
1.I use this number recognition page generator to create a page of random numbers within a given range (your choice of range) - make sure you pick "random"
(You can also just use a 100 chart and have the kids cut out the numbers - obviously this would take longer because you're dealing with a lot more numbers!
2.I make a Venn Diagram with two different categories - Here are some examples of what I have used:
•Odd
•Even
•Two Digit numbers
•Three Digit numbers
•___ in the hundreds place
•___ in the tens place
•___ in the ones place
•Less than ___
•Greater than ___
The possibilities are really endless. For the older grades, would be great with multiples/factors/common denominators, etc...
3.I give the kids both sheets - they cut the numbers out of the page and glue them in the correct spots on the Venn Diagram. If a number does not fit in either circle, then they glue it OUTSIDE of the two circles. It's a great way to work on number sense and combine old/new concepts, review, etc.

I hope to upload some photos of my kids participating in this activity very soon!
Website visitors can help our classroom by purchasing items from my Amazon Wishlist or making a PayPal donation - all donations and ad revenue received on this site are spent on classroom books and other materials.
Parents - you can also help our classroom by purchasing books for your child from Scholastic book orders. Many books are $2 or less!
