Teaching Ideas: Sight Words
Here are some links, downloads and fun ideas for teaching Sight Words.
First, I highly recommend Child 1st for some wonderful sight word flash cards, posters, and borders with pictures built into the text! Click on the picture to visit the website.
I use their sight word phrases/sentences to make mix/match games for my kids. I printed and laminated the sentences, made a colored line on the back in several different colors, and then cut each word apart. I put 8 or so sentences in a bag and they have to make sentences that make sense. They can check their work or get a little help by checking the color coding.
I will try to post some photos in the new school year of my students completing this activity.
Now, here are some items I have created to help with learning sight words (list 1, 2, etc correspond to the above website):
Packets to send home to parents with flash cards and activity ideas
Sight word phrase cards to use as flash cards or as a POP game
Do you know how to play POP? Put all the words in a can, including some that say POP on them. Students take turns choosing and reading a word. If they read it correctly, they keep it. If they don't, they put it back. If they pick POP, they have to put ALL of their words back! The winner is the one with the most words when time is up! My kids LOVE this game! Give it a try!
